LEGEND
TOC (Total organic carbon). Sum parameter embracing all organic compounds in water. The higher the value, the more organic ballast the river is carrying. No guideline value laid down by the drinking water ordinance.
Conductivity. Sum parameter representing a measure for the ionic components dissolved in water. The higher the value the more matter is to be found in the water. Guideline value 2500 µs/cm at 20 °C according to drinking water ordinance.
Nitrate. Salts of nitric acid. Used as nitrogen fertilizer. High values indicate intense agricultural use. Higher amounts in drinking water can lead to the "blue baby condition". Guideline value 50 mg/l according to the drinking water ordinance.
Phosphate. Salts of phosphoric acid. Phosphor compounds find their way into water via fertilizers and via human excrement by way of water treatment plants. Higher values indicate agricultural contamination and dense housing. No guideline value laid down by the drinking water ordinance.
Potassium. Silver colored light metal. Volatile in the air and in water, to be found only in compounds. Potassium compounds make their way into the water via fertilizers and via human excrement by way of water treatment plants. High values indicate agricultural contamination and dense housing. No guideline value laid down by the drinking water ordinance.
Cadmium. Silvery metal. Mainly used in galvanics and the production of pigments and alloys. High values in river water indicate industrial use. Cadmium is poisonous and can accumulate in the body over years. Guideline value 0.005 mg/l according to the drinking water ordinance.
Mercury. Liquid silvery heavy metal. Its particular features make it suitable for use in thermometers or Hg vapor lamps and as a filling (amalgam) in dentistry. Highly poisonous. Found in water it is an indication of human (industrial) activities. Guideline value 0.001 mg/l according to the drinking water ordinance.
Lead. Soft heavy metal. Used in accumulators (car batteries), radiation protection and alloys (for example, metal letters). Lead is toxic, accumulates in the bones of the body and leads to chronic disease. Guideline value 0.025 mg/l according to the drinking water ordinance.
